United States of America
There are currently 29 colleges providing osteopathic education in the United States. Details about schools providing osteopathic education recognized for licensure to practice osteopathy and osteopathic medicine in the United States can be obtained through the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine. The term "osteopath" in the USA refers to a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) who provides osteopathic medicine (surgery & prescription in addition to osteopathic manual treatment). Graduates of European style osteopathy (manual osteopathy) must refrain from calling themselves osteopaths. Instead they should use "osteopathic manual practitioner" when practicing in the USA. European style osteopaths are prohibited from rendering diagnosis & performing joint manipulation in the USA. They are permitted to provide all other osteopathic techniques.[1]
